Not surprisingly, senior citizens -- those 65 and older -- are the least likely group to have Internet access, according to a recent report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Only 15% of senior citizens nationwide go online, compared with 56% of all Americans, the report says. One reason for this dramatic digital divide is that most Internet users were introduced to the technology in the 1990s at work or school -- after many senior citizens had retired. In addition, many seniors living on fixed incomes can't afford a computer. But contrary to popular belief, most senior citizens are not afraid of computers, says Meredith Taylor, CEO of Senior Surfers "Older adults are not technophobic," insists Taylor, "but they do need some hands-on training. Many of our students say they've gone to adult education classes, but the pace was intimidating." Source: http://www.svbizink.com/closeup/closeupdetails.asp?iid=203&aid=2390 |
